Paraffin Surf Wax- A Sticky Situation

Updated: Jan 14, 2020

The pursuit of CannabaX thus far has been an incredible teacher to our process of creation and awareness to surf wax and its effects to our waters. When my brother and I began working on formulations we knew that we wanted to stay true to the most natural ingredients possible in the embodiment of CannabaX.

Following this commitment has led to an eye opening realization that traditional surf waxes are created with a base of Paraffin wax, synthetic tacifiers and synthetic fragrances that have a direct impact to our oceans. I am not sure if it has been my personal ignorance that led to this lack of understanding of what I have been applying to my board before paddling out or if the surfing community as a whole is lacking this awareness. From the discussions I've held with surfing friends; it seems to be the latter.

Parrafin Wax is a by-product of the petroleum extraction process, which in itself is a harmful process to our environment. Extraction of petroleum emits Co2 and harmful emissions into the air as the extraction occurs and once the state of petroleum has been completed, the sludge at the bottom of the mix is essentially separated and ran through a bleaching process to eliminate the black and grey sludge state to make it an appealing and "clean" white wax.

The common household bleach sits at 10%, which in itself is a harmful product. The industrial grade bleach used in the paraffin wax process is 100%!

My assumption on the lack of awareness in our surfing community has strengthened my motivation for CannabaX. I do not wish to use this awareness as a channel to boost the growth of CannabaX; my motivation for spreading this is in direct relation to a collective awareness in our community of surfers.

From the time paraffin sludge is extracted to its refinement process; I have learned that every step has a harmful repercussion to our environment. If you have invested time in reading this post I want to Thank you and ask that you please help spread this awareness to our community of surfers to ensure that we are minimizing these harmful effects surf session by surf session.

Much love to you and our organic alternative options.
